What is Bowen Technique?

Bowen technique is a soft tissue therapy that utilises small precise movements over specific areas to initiate the body’s innate healing capabilities.  It allows the body to heal at its own pace when stimulated with minimum input.  Bowen works directly on various tissues and structures of the body, including muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, joints and nerves.
In a bowen move either one or more of these structures will be activated.
During a Bowen session the practitioner leaves the client for a couple of minutes at regular intervals.  Bowen has been proved to be a therapy that stands up to the philosophy of less is more.  The wait after 2 to 6 moves is to allow the body to assimilate the stimulus being input to the receptors.  Because the moves are done in a distraction free area that is relaxing and safe the stimulation although small is undiluted and potent.  The wait gets this very tangible message through the system cleary and precisely.

What to expect at a Bowen session

If it is your first apointment you will be asked to fill out a questionniare and discuss the current reason for your treatment.  You may be asked to remove some clothing to enable me to look at your posture.  Although it is often said that Bowen can be done through light clothing, there are some moves that are only effective if done over the skin.  For this reason I will ask you to undress down to your underwear for the treatment.  However it is of the upmost importance that you feel comfortable so if you prefer to keep more clothing on it will be better if you wear light, loose, comfortable garments or bring a change of clothing with you.
If you have never had a Bowen session before your first treatment will be an overall treatment.  This will involve moves on the back, over the gluteals, legs and neck.  This treatment is to prepare the body for future treatments.  You will probably be asked to come back for another one or two sessions if you have a specific complaint, at which time the treatment will vary from the first.  You may be asked to return for more sessions if it is evident that your complaint is of a more complex or chronic nature.
Bowen can be used as a relaxation therapy.  Most people say after their first session that they can not believe how relaxed they feel.
